Pat Carroll Career

Carroll earned an Emmy Award for her role on Caesar’s Hour in 1956, and from 1961 to 1964, she was a regular on the sitcom Make Room for Daddy.  She co-starred with June Allyson in the drama anthology series The DuPont Show. Carroll also appeared on The Red Buttons Show, The Danny Kaye Show, The Red Skelton Show, and The Carol Burnett Show during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.  In the 1965 production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical Cinderella, she co-starred as “Prunella,” one of the wicked stepsisters.

In the late 1970s Carroll’s successful one-woman show on Gertrude Stein, Gertrude Stein, Gertrude Stein, Gertrude Stein (by playwright Marty Martin), won several major theater awards; she recorded version won a 1980 Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word, Documentary or Drama. In early 1976, Carroll was cast as Lily, the mother of Shirley Feeney (played by Cindy Williams) in the episode “Mother Knows Worst” on the hit ABC situation comedy, Laverne & Shirley.

She portrayed Pearl Markowitz, the mother of Adam Arkin‘s character Lenny Markowitz, in the 1977 CBS situation comedy Busting Loose.

In the 1980s, she played newspaper owner Hope Stinson on the syndicated The Ted Knight Show (the old Too Close for Comfort) during its final season in 1986, and Gussie Holt, Suzanne Somers’ lead character’s mother on the syndicated sitcom She’s the Sheriff (1987–1989).  Carroll has done a lot of voice-over work on animated shows like A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, Galaxy High, Foofur, and A Goofy Movie since the late 1980s.  She played Katrina Stoneheart in the TV show Pound Puppies. Carroll played Jon’s fiery Grandmother in two Garfield television specials (A Garfield Christmas and Garfield’s Thanksgiving). She also voiced Granny in Hayao Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro, which was re-released in 2005. Carroll sung “Poor Unfortunate Souls” in Disney’s The Little Mermaid in 1989, as the sea witch Ursula.  Carroll has described the part as one of her favorites throughout her career in interviews. She has since repeated the role in other mediums such as the Kingdom Hearts video game series, the spinoff television series, the Disney+ series The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse, and many Disney theme park attractions and shows. Carroll also appeared on Celebrity Sweepstakes, You Don’t Say, To Tell the Truth, Match Game 73, Password, and I’ve Got a Secret, among other game shows.  She is a member of the Actors Studio and has had a successful career in theater, having appeared in productions of Our Town and Sophocles’ Electra.  She played Sir John Falstaff, a balding knight with beards, in The Merry Wives of Windsor at the Shakespeare Theatre at the Folger in 1990.
